The Higginsons are a very special family and I’m lucky to count them as friends. Just a few weeks ago they let me into their home to document a day in their magical lives.
Rather than spending just an hour or so capturing static poses of the family, it was so much more appropriate, (and exciting!) to spend an entire day with Chris, Georgie, Leo & India. I was there to be a ‘fly-on-the-wall’. To document a real day in their lives. No direction or posing involved.
This is the style of shooting that I love. It’s how I prefer to document a wedding, so why not do the same for a family photo shoot?
I feel Georgie describes it best:
“With nervous anticipation [of the day] – Would the kids keep their clothes on? Would Indie use the bush loo? Would Leo do his usual and ride over a dog? Could Chris and I subtly shout at each other? But it’s the beauty in the nitty gritty of every day life that Emily captured
and made us see that amongst the madness, fatigue, mum clothes, laughter, caffeine, re-repeating yourself a million times, constant eating, questioning, noise and chaos there’s a lot of love going on too!”
It was incredible to witness and capture on camera the joy and beauty that exists in this family. No fancy clothes or extraordinary occasion necessary. What’s more important than those precious memories with your family? With your kids playing, learning and growing?
Spending the day with the Higginsons, from early in the morning when sleepy heads looked out from morning snuggles to night time stories tucked up in bed, was a complete joy and totally hilarious. I wondered if the kids would be put off by my presence and my camera but Leo and Indie went about their day as usual. It featured lots of eating, bikes, piles of sand, guinea pigs, cupcakes, hiding from storms, umbrellas, struggles to get into clothes, lots of taking off of clothes, lego, and a whole lot of laughter.
Thank you so much to Chris, Georgie, Leo and Indie for letting me capture your day! I look forward to seeing how things have changed when we do it again next year and I can’t wait to hang out again at your amazing lodge soon!
